Carol Ann Fay

I am currently a third-year Core Sculpture student at Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Old Lyme, Connecticut. Earlier courses in drawing, painting and sculpture inspired me to pursue the focused, high-quality instruction offered at Lyme Academy, which I felt was essential to realizing my full potential as an artist. My interest in art began while attending St. Barnabas School in the Bronx, New York. Each week we attended Mass, and I was captivated by the historic church, with its stained glass windows and Gothic-influenced architecture. As I grew older, I became fascinated by medieval and early Renaissance art, with its profound spiritual symbolism and use of gold. These early experiences sparked an enduring desire in me to create, even as life led me down other paths. Now, devoting myself fully to the practice of sculpture, I bring a renewed excitement to the world of art, as well as the insight that comes from a multitude of life experiences.Whereas the built environment of the church caught my attention in youth, I have become increasingly fascinated by the human figure. I am drawn to its movement, gesture, and emotion. My inspiration derives from both nature and imagination, allowing observation and creativity to guide each piece in tandem. My goal is always to create sculptures that are expressive and resonant, shaped as they are by personal and spiritual experiences. Sculpture lets me express feelings and emotions with honesty and immediacy. At the same time, I feel that sculpture must never merely be the narration of my individual story. I want each piece to be left open, a site where viewers can bring their personal reflections and hopefully discover connections to their own lives. I believe that art should extend beyond the lone creator, to become universal and accessible to all.
